Q. How is motor oil quality determined?
A. This is a very complicated subject, but simply put: Current and future levels of motor oil quality are established by technical societies and automobile manufacturers working together with the oil industry in committees to establish a standard of performance. These standards address concerns such as oxidation and heat resistance, viscosity loss and gain, engine deposits, engine wear, fuel economy, exhaust emissions, oil consumption and chemical content.
The primary coordinating body is the American Petroleum Institute (A.P.I.) whose responsibility is to organize and publish the specifications for the new engine oil service category. A.P.I. 's latest standards for passenger car motor oils are "SM" which superseded "SL", and EOLCS "GF-4" which superseded "GF-3".
EOLCS (Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System is a voluntary licensing and certification program that goes beyond the regular A.P.I. standards and requires both fuel economy improvements and a maximum allowable amount for a specific additive element (Phosphorus).
To comply with the A.P.I. and EOLCS requirements and gain recognition and registration, an engine oil producer/marketer must certify that they use a base oil and additive combination that has been proven by engine and laboratory testing to have passed all requirements (at a typical cost of $80,000 or more).
Q. What is the quality of the motor oil sold by U.S.Oil Company?
A. For viscosity grades of 5W/20, 5W/30 and 10W/30 U.S. Oil products are A.P.I. licensed "SM" and GF-4. In addition, our 5W/20 is compliant with the extreme requirements of Ford and Honda.
Q. Why do so many service facilities use U.S. Oil Company lubricants?
A. Service facilities throughout the Northeast rely on U.S. Oil to deliver the latest in automotive lubricant technology. Our products meet or exceed the latest specification of the American Petroleum Institute and the performance requirements of all US and foreign manufactured engines-we guarantee it. That's because we sell the very same products to these service facilities that we produce for the nation's leading oil marketers.
We also provide technical support, dispensing equipment, and other assistance to service facilities that allow them to better serve their customers.
